Arkansas on Top

In one of the most volatile polls in recent history, the National Ten Pin Coaches Association (NTCA) voted Arkansas State as its No. 1 ranked team after one month of competition.  The Red Wolves, second in the pre-season poll, were a clear choice over Fairleigh Dickinson, Vanderbilt, Sam Houston State and Nebraska, which held down the second through fourth (tie) positions.

Consistency must have been on the voter’s minds as Arkansas State notched 12 first-place votes based upon two second-place finishes at the Sugar Bowl Classic, the New Jersey Jamboree and a sixth place finish at the Crusader Classic.

Fairleigh Dickinson, with seven first-place ballots, climbed from pre-season fourth into second on the strength of one outing, a third place New Jersey Jamboree finish.

Vanderbilt earned six first place votes and jumped from fifth into third on the strength of a championship at the New Jersey Jamboree and second place at the Crusader Classic.  The Commodores were fourth at the Sugar Bowl.

Nebraska, who had previously been ranked No. 1, ties with Sam Houston in points for fourth place.

McKendree jumped from ninth into sixth with a win at the Crusader Classic. Wisconsin-Whitewater maintained seventh place, Stephen F. Austin fell from third into eighth, Central Missouri was ninth and Delaware State was rated 10th.

An all-time high of 37 programs received multiple votes in the poll, an indication of the growing balance among NCAA bowling institutions.
